Heiligenblut & National Park Hohe Tauern
The small village of Heiligenblut is among the most touristy spots in Carinthia - alongside with Maria Worth, Velden, Hochosterwitz and Gurk. In the case of Heiligenblut, this is due to the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern and the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse.
The National Park Hohe Tauern (www.hohetauern.at) is the biggest of Austria and one of the biggest National Parks in Europe. It covers a total area of 1800 square kilometres and land in the three provinces of Tyrol, Salzburg (biggest share) and Carinthia.
The National Park includes the Central Alps with the highest mountain ranges of Austria, including Mount Grossglockner (3798 metres high) and Mount Grossvenediger (3666 metres high). The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is an alpine road to near the mountain top and offers spectacular scenery. On the way upwards (or downwards), several museums tell the story of its construction in the 1930ies (mostly to fight unemployment and support tourism), the ecology of the region and other aspects of the "Tauern" mountains. Unsurprisingly, the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is Austria′s second most popular attraction after Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna.
Grossglockner, peak, 3,797 m high, at the Tyrol province border, S Austria, the highest point in the Hohe Tauern range and in Austria. It is traversed by the Grossglocknerstrasse (built 1930-35), a magnificent Alpine highway rising up to 7,770 ft (2,368 m). On the mountain is the great Pasterze glacier, which grew to its greatest extent in the mid-1800s. It is now 19.8 sq km in area and 8 km long.
Millstatt: The “Jewel of Carinthia”
Millstatt is a village in Carinthia that is situated near the northern shore of Lake Millstatter See near the Nockberge. The Nockberge mountain range in Carinthia is an area of outstanding beauty, a top-notch tourist attraction, an important nature reserve with lots of endangered plant and animal species, beautiful area for hiking. Millstatt itself benefits quite a bit from the vicinity to these mountains, however, it is best known as a formerly imperial spa town that managed to preserve much of its 19th century splendor.
Millstatt is the most historically and culturally important village around lake Millstatter See.
From Millstatt you can also easily arrive at the top ski areas of Carinthia by car.
Bad Kleinkirchheim in Carinthia: Skiing & Spa or Hiking & Spa
Bad Kleinkirchheim is a popular tourist destination in Southern Carinthia, near Spittal an der Drau, with a clear sales point: It offers simple, gentle mountains ideal for beginners, families and elderly people for both skiing and hiking; plus it has hot springs that feed two modern, public thermal spa pools. This in combination with lots of up-market hotels that offer good food and shelter, and the vicinity to the southern border makes Bad Kleinkirchheim hugely popular with Italians, as well as families from Austria.
Bad Kleinkirchheim is seen as the ideal area to start skiing by many Austrians, and the relatively low prices - especially off season - has made the small Carinthian town rather successful. Bad Kleinkirchheim lacks the usual ski resort attractions of nightclubs, crazy sport events and gogo-girls. Instead, it offers a gentle version of hiking and skiing holidays, and it is doing well this way: Bad Kleinkirchheim usually ranks among the 20 most-visited tourist destinations in Austria.
Bad Kleinkirchheim offers access to the pseudo-National Park Nockberge, which are not an internationally approved National Park, but an impressive chunk of nature nonetheless.
